According to the trial transcripts, we know that Andrew Jackson Scott and Madison Teat murdered William M. Steen and George W. Steen. We also know that Madison Teat and Cullen Steen, William's oldest son, were friends. The Scott's, Teat's and Steen's were all neighbors and knew each other well. Madison Teat's sister was married to Andrew Jackson Scott. Cullen and Madison (he was nick named Matt) were witnesses to a wedding on the "Bill" Steen place in July of that same year. The wedding of Elisha Jane Downs to Andrew Counts. Just a month later Madison was charged with the brutal murder of Cullen's father and brother! What could have happened?? Why did Madison take part in such a horrific act against the family members of a friend?? How could this have happened and what was it REALLY about? After the murders, Cullen fled Mississippi with his family. Why?? Why would the oldest son of William leave his mother and his siblings never to return to Mississippi? Did someone threaten him? What was he afraid of? Was this about money? Was it about property? Was a woman involved?? Why were these men killed?

This site will explore the trial transcripts and try to gain a better understanding of this family tragedy. I want to know why my ancestors were murdered! I am in touch with many Steen cousins on line that are also interested in this family history. Any information you could in-put is welcome. So, join in our exploration!

William M. Steen and his beloved son George were ambushed and brutally murdered in the early hours of a dreary morning,  August 26, 1871 in Montgomery County, Mississippi.   According to excerpts from Circuit Judge Jason Niles' diary,  on Friday, August 25, 1871, William and George Steen had been in court in Carroll County,  Carrollton, Mississippi to settle a civil dispute with the Harvey family.  Those records state that "peace was made between the parties" and they left.  I will be posting the actual happenings from that court date.  The dispute was settled without incident according to Judge Niles writings.    The weather was bad and the Steens stayed the night in Carrollton.  On the morning of August 26, 1871 William and George set out on their horses for home in Attala County.  They rode hard and fast for the homes they had made and the family that awaited them.  Little did they know they would meet their fate in a lane they had ridden many tmes.  Witnesses  would hear the shots as they "rang out" in the narrow lane where the Steen's were ambushed without warning.  There would be eyewitness accounts of  the brutal slayings and three trials  that would become one of Mississippi's most famous.  Many questions would go unanswered about their murders.  To this day it is not known why they were killed.  There is much speculation as the stories on the "Steen Cemetery" site indicate.  Still, many questions remain unanswered.
